Limescale problem? No need to panic! Here are some ways you can keep it under control

If you live in a hard water area, you may already be familiar with the milky deposits that blight your shiny taps and clog up your kettle. Read on to find out a little more about the dreaded calcium carbonate – that’s the fancy name for limescale – and what you can do to prevent it.

What is it and where does it come from?

When rain water passes through soft rock in the ground – like limestone and chalk – it picks up minerals that turn it into ‘hard water’. Despite the UK water authorities’ best efforts at filtering the water, it still ends up in millions of our homes.

Limescale rears its ugly head as dirty, chalky residue that forms wherever water collects in your home. This can be on or around taps, in toilets, in sinks and baths, on shower screens and even on mirrors. We’ve all seen it, and we’ve all spent numerous hours trying to make it disappear!

Why is it bad?

Well we know it doesn’t look very nice, but there’s more to it than that. When hard water gets really hot – during a shower or bath for example – it evaporates and leaves a very stubborn residue behind. This can start to block shower heads and taps, making washing a real pain.

Limescale can also build up around the toilet rim so although you may only see a few hints of the residue, it could be allowing much less water into the bowl for every flush. That can mean all sorts of problems with blocked toilets and it’s also far from hygienic.

Now we know that sounds worrying but relax...take a deep breath...help is at hand!

How to get of rid of it

Advances in cleaning technology mean that you don’t need to rely on endless hours of scrubbing or experimenting with old wives’ tales about coca-cola and vinegar for limescale removal anymore. Harpic’s product range can cut cleaning time considerably so you’ll be free to spend your time on other things.

Tackling toilets

Harpic 100% Limescale Remover and Harpic Power Plus does just that. Unlike bleach – which just bleaches the colour out of limescale - Harpic completely removes stubborn build-ups in your toilet.

A great tip for application is using your hands – with some rubber gloves of course – instead of a toilet brush. It may sound unappealing but it will mean you can reach the water inlets just under the rim and ensure that as much water as possible comes into the bowl with each flush.

Keeping your toilets limescale free and dazzlingly clean is easy to achieve with Harpic Power Plus Tablets, and the beauty of these tablets is that they work on removing limescale from the difficult to reach U-bend in the toilet. Just pop one into the bowl and then enjoy a cuppa while it works its magic. It’s lovely to see someone else doing the hard work for a change, even if it is a tablet! If you have a septic tank at your home, you’ll be pleased to hear that these can be used safely to treat tanks too so you could save yourself some cash on regular removal costs.

The annoying thing about limescale is that it always tries to come back. To help stop this happening, you can now get the powerful little in-bowl cleaner, Harpic 100% Limescale Remover and Harpic Power Plus which will keep working every time you flush.

That’s a formidable arsenal to help you tackle the toilet but if you’d like to know about products that fight limescale in other areas of your home – click here to visit the Cillit Bang website
